I visited the Galitzenklamm gorge twice in 2025 — first as a regular hiker, and later as a via ferrata climber.
As a hiker, I would rate this place as neither particularly good nor bad. There are many more interesting gorges in Austria, but if you happen to be passing by, it's worth stopping for about an hour. Unfortunately, access to the gorge is subject to an entrance fee.
As a via ferrata climber, however, I have to rate the gorge very positively. There are six via ferratas here, ranging from an easy practice route graded B to long and demanding E routes. The routes can be combined, shortened, or extended — it's a proper via ferrata park in every sense.
The difficulty ratings of individual sections according to TOPO are accurate. A D-rated section will already give you a real workout, and I personally didn't even attempt the pure E route. My favorite was the Adrenalin ferrata (D/E), and among the easier ones I would recommend Familien Galitzenklamm (B/C).
The Adrenalin ferrata runs along the gorge and is the only way to reach its very end. An alternative easier route shown in TOPO on the opposite side of the stream no longer exists. However, there is a completely new section that is not yet marked anywhere — a B/C ferrata running a few meters above the gorge, with a demanding C/D section directly above it.
Roughly halfway along the ferrata, you'll reach a suspension bridge crossing the gorge. The descent ropes down to the stream have been removed, so accessing it is no longer straightforward. You either have to jump down or climb without protection.
Unfortunately, I can't describe the rest of the route, as I turned back right after the suspension bridge — I was already running low on strength. It is definitely a long and physically demanding ferrata, which I would recommend only to climbers with good fitness and solid technical skills.
