The summit Degenhorn, as we named it, seemed fitting for our little group. The literal translation would be closer to "Cord Horn".

The hike is fairly long, even when using two cable cars, which I definitely recommend. But all of this is rewarded by a stunning green pass that makes up a large portion of the route.

Along the way, you'll encounter grazing cows on a breathtaking green plateau tucked between sharp mountain ridges. It's unique, beautiful — I was enchanted. Honestly, the unofficial "proper" name for this area should probably be hidden gem.

And if the plateau starts to feel a bit repetitive after a couple of hours, you're treated to views of the Defereggen Alps and Degenhornsee Lake. You'll also reach the "toughest" section of the route, where you have to descend about 50 meters sharply to the lake, then climb 150 meters back up to the summit of Kleines Degenhorn (2,849 m) — and then repeat it again in reverse.

Some of you might be tempted, as we were, to stop at the small Degenhorn (2,849 m) and skip the remaining 100 meters of elevation to the taller "brother," but definitely don't.

Firstly, it gives your hiker ego a little boost, and more importantly, you'll be rewarded with views of nearly the entire Defereggen Alps, which I would rank among the best I've seen in Austria. See for yourself.

Shortest route from the cable car to the summit.
